I realized when I got a question about it that I left out a very important piece of information in my article last week, the date of Trick-or-Treat on the square. It’s not too late though. Trick-or-Treat on the Square is this Saturday, Oct. 27, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Visit the booths outside and come in the library for some treats, too. Come and see our staff dressed as characters from “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” They will be dressed as literary characters on Halloween Day, Wednesday, Oct. 31, so visit us then, too. If our patrons would like to help out the cause, please bring a bag of wrapped candy by the library before the 27th.

Our hometown boy in this collaboration is Rick West. Rick, who grew up in Rising Fawn and graduated from Northwest Georgia High School in 1981, became the 12th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) on Dec. 12, 2008, and served in that capacity until Sept. 28, 2012. This book tells his story and that of five other enlisted persons who made it to the top in their respective branches of service. The book is now available to be checked out at the library. Rick’s brother and sister and many other relatives and friends still live in Dade County.
There will be a FREE computer class at the library on Tuesday, October 30 at 5:30 p.m. It will be a Basic Computer Skills class and will be tailored to the needs of those attending the class. Call the library at (706) 657-7857 to sign up.
Our November Book Club will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. at the library. We will be discussing Consider the Fork: A History of How We Cook and Eat by Bee Wilson. Blending history, science and personal anecdotes, Wilson reveals how our culinary tools and tricks came to be and how their influence has shaped food culture today. A good choice for the month of Thanksgiving, we thought.
