Dade County Schools won platinum-level recognition at the 2018 Golden Radish Awards held at the Georgia Freight Depot in Atlanta. The Golden Radish Award publicly recognizes Georgia school districts for best practices in farm-to-school programs, such as local food procurement, exposing students to new foods through taste tests and incorporating gardening and cooking activities in curriculum.
Dade County Schools received kudos for their work. Farm to school is promoted through Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) Food Science classes at Dade High School. The FACS students grow and maintain an herb garden for use in their food production classes and also dry herbs. They test recipes and prepare food using both fresh and dried ingredients from their garden.
Dade County agriculture students worked with the Senior Citizens Center to install and plant a garden for the residents! The high school strategically planted flowers to assist with insect control and to attract pollinators.
Students, teachers and parents recognized the pride and accomplishment in their students resulting from their garden experiences. Dade County Schools was one of 84 Georgia School Districts recognized at the awards. Collectively, these districts served more than 1.3 million students a whopping 109 million school meals with locally-grown food items during the 2017-18 school year.
