Former Dade Probate Judge Jan Ellison, 69, died on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018, after a battle with CLL (Chronic lymphocytic leukemia) and lymphoma.

The late judge was born Barbara Jan Ellison on June 20, 1949, to Wendell and Thelma Palmer of Sand Mountain. In 1967, she graduated from Davis School, where she was a member of the basketball team, majorette and homecoming queen.

In 1988, she went to work for the Dade Probate Court then presided over by Judge John Bradford. In 1992, she ran for and won the probate judgeship herself. She served five consecutive terms and retired after 20 years in office in 2012. Many Dade couples know her as the official who provided over their weddings.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, in the chapel of Moore Funeral Home. A full obituary is in the obituary section, accessible through The Planet's navigator above.
