Trick or Treat on the Square on Saturday was as usual wildly popular. Hundreds of little ones in costume showed up to visit Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, conveniently located inside the Dade County Public Library.
Did you watch the Great Read finale? I was very happy with the results. They counted down from 100 to the Top 5, giving us more information about the Top 5 as the show went on. America’s Most Loved novel is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. It also happens to be my favorite book and I voted for it many times.
Rounding out the Top 5 were Outlander by Diana Galbadon, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. The only one I haven’t read is Outlander, and I voted for the other four several times.
I also voted many times for Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, so I was glad to see it in the No. 8 place. Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell is No. 6, Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White is No. 7, The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis is No. 9, and another favorite of mine, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte is No. 10.

Trick or Treat on the Square was a big event on Saturday, but the library staff will also be dressed as literary characters on Halloween day, Wednesday, Oct. 31. Come by and see if you recognize their characters.
Remember that our local history room has lots of great resources if you are interested in local history or genealogy. We have some great volunteers who have worked on cataloging items so that they are easier to find and some who are working on scanning old pictures and building a database of those. We also have our old newspapers digitized so that patrons can search for the articles they are looking for. We can copy and/or enlarge old or new pictures, too.
The Dade County Historical Society will have a program at the library on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. The subject will be Medical Practices of the Civil War and the speaker is Anthony Hodges, an expert on this subject. The program is FREE and the public is welcome.
