Lamar Lowery will represent District 1, or north Dade/Wildwood, on the Dade County Commission come January. Running as a Republican, he easily beat Patrick Hickey, who was running as a Democrat. The unofficial vote count--poll numbers won't be certified until sometime next week--was 4239 for Lowery and 983 from Hickey.
District commissioners are elected at large, with voters in all districts casting votes for who will represent each.
Turnout was pretty good at almost 53 percent. For governor, Dade voters went solidly Republican, voting for Brian Kemp over Stacey Abrams 4496-884.
But the fluid nature of party affiliation in county politics was underscored by the District 1 race. Lamar Lowery had served two terms in the District 1 commission seat as a Democrat before switching parties for the 2010 election, when current Commissioner Mitchell Smith defeated him in the Republican primary. This year, Jane Dixon, who had run in a previous board of election race as a Democrat, ran against Lowery in the Republican primary.
All the other local offices up for election this year were settled in the Republican primary.
