Sgt. Chad Payne, information officer for the Dade County Sheriff's Office, reported that a tractor-trailer driver has been booked into the Dade County jail after a noontime wreck with another semi today that killed the other driver.
Sgt. Payne could not supply the name of either driver as yet but said that the arrested driver had been headed north on I-59 when, just north of Trenton, his truck crossed the median and slammed head-on into the other tractor-trailer, which was driving south. He said he believed the surviving driver has been charged with vehicular homicide; he promised to send an official list of charges later. Sgt. Payne had no information yet as to what might have caused the northbound driver to leave his lane and cause the collision.
The accident happened at 12:01 p.m., said Sgt. Payne, and as he reported shortly after 4 p.m. the southbound lane of I-59 remained shut down. With Thanksgiving holiday travel beginning, traffic was already heavy, said the sergeant; now it is worse.
The Georgia State Patrol confirmed that one person had died and that a tractor-trailer remained overturned on Highway 59 South.
