Sgt. Chad Payne is information officer for the Dade County Sheriff's Office.

The surviving tractor-trailer truck driver in Friday's fatal I-59 accident, Gustavo Rodriguez-Pagan, 37, of Breinigsville, Pa., has been charged with driving under the influence and homicide by vehicle in the first degree, as well as the lesser traffic violations of driving on the wrong side of the road, failure to maintain lane and driving within the emergency lane/median.

The incident happened on Friday, Nov. 16, at approximately noon. The Trenton Police Department along with the Dade County Sheriff's Office and Georgia State Patrol were dispatched to Interstate 59 just north of the Trenton exit, in reference to a wreck involving a tractor-trailer. All Dade County units arrived on scene and found that the accident actually involved two tractor-trailers.

The driver of one of the tractor-trailers was found to be out walking around the accident, while the other driver involved was found to be entrapped inside the cab of his semi-truck, which had been completely detached from its frame. The entrapped driver was also found to be deceased on scene.

Early reports from witnesses suggested that Rodriguea-Pagan's tractor-trailer crossed the median and struck the other tractor-trailer head-on.

Interstate 59 South was completely shut down for approximately six hours. The Georgia State Patrol is currently investigating the accident.

Dade Sheriff Ray Cross wants to thank all agencies involved in this incident for their prompt response and assistance.
