Qualifying ended Wednesday at noon for the special city of Trenton election this year. There were no surprises, said poll officer Lowanna Vaughn: The three candidates who had filed their papers and paid their fees earlier in the week will be the only ones vying in the March 19 election to be Trenton's new police commissioner.
Kirk Forshee, Johnny Taylor and Mike Norris will be those three. Forshee, who announced his candidacy earlier this winter in the local press, is a supervisor in the trucking industry. Johnny Taylor is retired from the Trenton Streets Department and had run for the police seat once before, in 2017 against incumbent Sandra Gray. Mike Norris was a Trenton police officer until leaving the department recently after an injury.
The police commissioner slot is empty because of the abrupt departure of longtime incumbent, Sandra Gray. Ms. Gray left her post in September 2018 after having her November 2017 reelection, when she married and moved outside Trenton city limits.
