Fattening...But Female Empowering? Anyway, It's Girl Scout Cookie Season!

The Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians (GSCSA) launched its 2019 Girl Scout Cookie season this month, touting it not only as a fundraiser for the girls’ group but “a powerful entrepreneurship program for the next generation of female leaders.”

"Each and every Girl Scout Cookie purchase is key to supporting the change-makers of today and tomorrow,” said a Jan. 17 news release from GSCSA’s Knoxville, Tenn., office.

GSCSA says all the classics will return for 2019, including the trademarked Girl Scout brands Thin Mints, Samoas, S’mores, Tagalongs, Do-Si-Dos, Savannah Smiles, Toffee-tastic and Trefoils.

Girls Scouts use their cookie earnings to pay for travel, outdoor adventure and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) scholastic programming. “Many girls put the money toward impactful community projects right in their own backyards, from supporting animal shelters and food banks to working with local and state legislators to change laws,” said the release.

“A recent Girl Scout Research Institute study found that two out of three girls who participate in the program learn five crucial skills—goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics,” read the release, in part. “The proceeds stay local, meaning that when consumers purchase the delicious cookies that come from a registered Girl Scout only, they’re giving back to their wider community.”

The release said that over half—53 percent—of female entrepreneurs and business owners are Girl Scout alumnae.
