News Alerts: Semi-Pro Football Signups On; Coke Oven Hike Off; Beekeepers Meet Tuesday

Coke Oven Hike Off

News Alert: The bad news is that the long-planned Dade Historical Society hike to the ruins of the Cole City coke ovens, which was scheduled for Saturday morning, has been postponed until March 2. The good news is that if you hadn't registered to go, you now still have time. The hike will start at 10:30 a.m. on March 3. Call (706-657-3857) or go by the Dade County Public Library to sign up for the free historic walk.

Library manager Marshana Sharp said the hike was canceled not just because of the chance of rain on Saturday but because with the rain that had already happened the trails were too washed out to allow hike organizers access to deploy portable toilets.

Semi-Pro Football Signups On

Signups for the new Dade County semi-pro Wolverines football team are this Saturday, Feb. 16, from 9 a.m.-noon at the Dade County Recreation Center (Four Fields) on Highway 11 South. Registration fee is $25, and you must be 18 or over to play. There will also be signups at the same time, same place, next Saturday, Feb. 23. Call Ron Rench for more information--(423) 667-6135.

And while we're at it....

Eddie Gwaltney, the new president of Tri-State Beekeepers, announces that the group will have its monthly meeting Tuesday, Feb.19, at 7 pm. The Beekeepers meet at the Ag Center by Dade Middle. They welcome anyone interested in beekeeping.
