Trenton Observes Arbor Day

Today is the Georgia observance of Arbor Day, and, from left, Georgia Forestry Service Ranger Kerry Phillips, Tree City President Eloise Gass, Trenton Mayor Alex Case and Tree City's Robin Thompson, Joy Golden and Carolyn Boatner solemnly gathered at American Legion Post 106 to plant a weeping cherry tree in honor of Bill Lockhart, the post's late commander. Eloise said an earlier tree planted in honor of Bill had failed to thrive.

The tree planters first pledged allegiance to the American flag, in the process of which they observed that the Legion post's Old Glory was looking a little the worse for wear while the military flag hung beside it looked as it had been through a battle (and lost). Mayor Case read a proclamation stating the city's position on trees which detailed their virtues in improving the environment, providing shade and boosting property values, and was overall in favor of them.

If you regret missing the ceremony, not to worry: The national observation of Arbor Day is April 26 and Eloise is sure to round up the usual suspects for that one, too. Watch these pages. She is also always in the market for strong backs to help her plant and weed the city flowerbeds, so if you'd like to help please give her a call at (423) 883-6388.
