PSAs: New Home Cleanup, SNAP SNAFU Warning, 4-H Seminars

Here are a few public service announcements and upcoming events to remember as the week starts:

  • First, Andrew McCurdy is organizing a litter cleanup for the New Home neighborhood and needs volunteers. The cleanup group will meet at the New Home Community Center (3565 New Home Rd Trenton, Georgia) on March 2 at 10 a.m. If anyone wants to help, please email Andrea at akmccurdy75@gmail.com.

  • The city of Trenton warns all residents and business owners within city limits that Georgia Power has three contractors crews working to change out all the streetlights to a newer LED technology. They will be working in all the city subdivisions, city streets and state roadways replacing the light fixtures for several weeks. If you have any questions or information on this please call City Hall at (706) 657-4167 or email Mayor Alex Case at Jacase@trentonga.gov.

  • The federal government shutdown has apparently thrown some wrenches into the works of the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), or food stamps program. Though the program remained fully funded despite the shutdown, deposit dates changed, some confusion resulted and some merchants have reportedly suspended their participation. So local SNAP recipients might check with store management before shopping, and if they have questions about their benefits might check with the Department of Family and Children's Services (DFACS) at (706) 657-7511.

  • The Tri-State Beekeepers will have its monthly meeting Tuesday, Feb.19, at 7 p.m. at the Ag Center in front of Dade Middle School off Hwy 136 W. It welcomes anyone interested in beekeeping.

  • The Dade University of Georgia Extension Office will host a Dade & Walker Fruit Tree Field Day from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at its location in the Ag Building in front of Dade Middle School off Highway 137 West. The $20 materials fee includes lunch and everything you need to enjoy this informative session. Deadline to register is Feb. 25. • There will be a free chainsaw safety class Feb. 28. Date: Thursday, 10 a.m.-noon at the Dade County Ag Bldg, 114 Pace Dr. (in front of Dade Middle School) Register by calling (706) 657-4116 or online at https://dadechainsaw02282019.eventbrite.com.

  • The Dade Historical Society's Cole City coke ovens hike has been postponed to Saturday, March 2. The hike will begin at 10:30 a.m. Call or stop by the Dade County Public Library to sign up and learn where to gather -- (706) 657-7857.

  • And don't forget that Dade's new voice in the Georgia statehouse, Colton Moore, has announced a town hall meeting this Sunday, Feb. 24, at 3 p.m. at the Senior Center on Highway 11 South, at the Four Fields athletic complex, at which the 65/5 tax exemption will figure prominently. See you there!
