4-H-ers learn about gardening via the time-honored paper-cup-seedling method.
We had a great time on Saturday, March 23, at the Read to Lead event at the Dade County Public Library. We saw many of our current 4-H’ers and lots of future 4-H’ers in the Dade County 4-H booth. Clover the 4-H Cow was there available for milking. She was very patient while kids practiced milking a cow (below). They also tried to “Feed the Pigs,” which looked suspiciously like cornhole. The Davis Elementary Chorus sounded great, as usual. We gave out over 100 4-H stickers to children in our booth, and approximately 900 parents and children total attended the Read to Lead event.
The 4-H Activity Club had their last meeting of this school year. Students made paper pots to plant an assortment of seeds in to take home and plant. They also watered all of the outside beds and harvested the mustard greens. Once the gardening was done, they settled in for a few rounds of board games.
The 4-H Activity Club year has been filled with arts & crafts projects, science experiments, gardening, service projects and leadership activities. The Dade Middle School Science Club continued its exploration of bridges during club time last week. Kids used the web site http://www.engineering.com/GamesPuzzles/CargoBridge.aspx to learn more about bridge construction and how different loads and different angles affect required bridge strength.
Having fun while accidentally learning–that is the Science Club way.
