We had a great time at Book Club last week talking to Dan Jolley, author of the book we read this month, The Storm. The Storm takes place in a fictional north Georgia county which seems to be somewhere around Catoosa County. One of the things we enjoyed about reading it was all the places we recognized.
The time of The Storm is during and after the tornadoes that ripped through Ringgold and Trenton in 2011. The main character is Sheriff Zandra Seagraves, a black woman who is elected sheriff through a fluke. The tornado uncovers a horrible torture chamber and Seagraves has to figure out what happened there with very little help from the members of the sheriff’s department, who are less than cooperative. Talking to Jolley about the ins and outs of writing this book was really fascinating.
Besides The Storm, which is the first book of a series that Jolley (left) plans to write, Dan Jolley has written other novels, comic books and video games. Among his other novels is a YA series called Alex Unlimited. He has written scripts for several of the Transformers video games, and dozens of comic books. We have a copy of The Storm at the library.
Next month the Book Club will be discussing The Cartographer of No Man’s Land by P.S. Duffy. From a hardscrabble village in Nova Scotia to the collapsing trenches of France, this is a debut novel about a family divided by World War I.

Coming up in May, there will be a series of cooking classes at the library on cooking healthy based on plant cuisine. The classes are FREE and will be on Wednesday evenings from 6:30- 8 p.m. during the month of May. More information on this later.
