Here are a couple of late-breaking notifications of events happening this week:
First, the Dade Board of Education will hold a special called meeting at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 24, at its offices in front of the high school on Highway 136 East. On the agenda is a facilities report and discussion of the Dade Middle School yearbook as well as an executive session on personnel. Dr. Jan Harris, superintendent of schools, says that the personnel session will be focused on several open faculty slots but not a new football coach for Dade High just yet.
The super says DCHS principal James Fahrney has had several inquiries but has not so far brought any candidates to her attention. She said the world of high school football is a specialized and well-informed one--much like that of band directors, she added--and that interest there in the Dade opening has been brisk. She expects Farhney will have a candidate or candidates to bring to her attention and that of the board fairly soon, said Dr. H.
The opening was created by the resignation of Brad Warren, incumbent football coach and, incidentally, the son of B of E member Brad Warren. A list of the board's other personnel announcements from its last regular meeting is attached at right.
Next: The Greater Dade Business Owners' Association (GDBOA) will hold its monthly networking luncheon at noon on Thursday, April 25, at Guthrie's Chicken. These are informative, Dutch-treat lunch sessions attended, and much valued, by numerous local small business operators. But they are open to all who wish to show up and this particular meeting may attract a more general crowd.
That's because Doug Anderton, general manager of the Dade Water Authority for almost five decades, due to retire in June, will be speaking on the proposed Dade reservoir on Lookout Creek. The Water Authority's board of directors recently paid $400,000 of the total half-million-dollar price to buy land for the controversial project. Anderton, interviewed earlier about the reservoir, argued that the water company had coveted that parcel of land for a reservoir since a 2005 strategic plan named a reservoir as the best recommendation for water security going forward.
Again, the luncheon is open to all--noon at Guthrie's.
