We have a great new resource for folks doing genealogy at the library. We just acquired a two-volume set of books entitled Obits and Death Notices from the DeKalb County, Alabama Newspapers 1890-1939.
Many people, including myself, have relatives and ancestors who lived in Dekalb County. I found obituaries for both of my great-grandmothers in the books. The obituaries are in chronological order and the books are indexed. They were compiled by Tommy Guice, a retired teacher and genealogist in Fort Payne. The obituary books are found in the Local History Room. They cannot be checked out, but are available for use in the history room.
Registration for Summer Reading will begin on May 20. You can register children at the library or go online at chrl.org and select the Dade County Library. The first program is June 6. We’ll have more details about this later.
This week’s Ready-to-Read program is about recycling.
Our Teen Book Club has a new name: YALL (Young Adult Literature Lovers). Join during the month of May and be entered into a prize drawing. YALL will meet on May 14 at 6 p.m. at the library. Members will discuss Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi. There will be free popcorn and coffee or water.
Can’t make it to the library? That’s OK, we discuss the book online, too! Chat with other teens who have read the book throughout the month. Please have a parent or guardian sign our permission form to participate in the online discussion.
There will be a series of cooking classes at the library during the month of May on Wednesday evenings. These classes are on how to cook healthfully using plant-based foods. The first class will be on Wednesday, May 8, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the library and the theme of the first class will be international foods. For more
