Things to look forward to at the library in the month of May: three more healthy cooking classes, Summer Reading sign-ups, dinner and a movie with a little eco-education, weekly Ready-to-Read programs, Teen Book Club, Adult Book Club, a Parent Café, and more. And, of course, we’re here for you to check out books and movies, make copies and send faxes. Let us know if we can help.
There will be two more Ready-to-Read classes this month on Thursdays, May 9 and 16. These will be discontinued for a couple of weeks as we gear up for Summer Reading in June.
The Parent Café will be this Tuesday, May 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. This is a FREE event sponsored by the Dade County Library and Dade First-Family Connections to show moms appreciation and help them receive a little pampering from their children. Enjoy light refreshments, have a hand massage from your child, get your nails painted, try a new hairdo and MORE.
The Teen Book Club or YALL (Young Adult Literature Lovers) will meet Tuesday, May 14, from 6 to 7 p.m. to discuss May’s Book of the Month: Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi. Enjoy coffee, popcorn and talking about books. Find us on Facebook under the “groups” section of the library’s Facebook page for online discussion.
Healthy Cooking classes continue at the library all May on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The first class is this Wednesday, May 8.
On Tuesday, May 21, the library invites you to the movie Symphony of the Soil. If you are interested in composting, come and learn about the do’s and don’ts. We’ll be showing you some cool environmentally friendly ways to dispose of your food waste after we feed you dinner! This event begins at 5:30 p.m. and seating is limited. Please RSVP by calling the library at (706) 657-7857. There will be a door prize, too!
The Dade County Historical Society is having its second annual Cemetery Walk. Come and learn more about some of Dade County’s early prominent citizens, even a famous author. The Cemetery Walk will take place at the Brock Cemetery on Saturday, May 18, from 4 p.m. There will be actors portraying the life stories of some of those buried in the cemetery. Those participating are asked to park at the Piney Grove Baptist Church where you may catch a bus to the cemetery.
While the cemetery walk doesn’t take place at the library, the historical society has used the library for research, planning meetings, and rehearsals in preparation for the
Cemetery Walk. We are happy to support their efforts to bring local history alive.
Signups for Summer Reading Club begin on Monday, May 20. You may register your children by going to chrl.org and looking for the icon for Summer Reading.
The Book Club will meet on Tuesday, May 21, at 7 p.m. to discuss The Cartographer of No Man’s Land by P.S. Duffy.
