Brock Morrison Cemetery Walk This Saturday, May 18

The Dade County Historical Society will host the second annual Cemetery Walk on Saturday, May 18. The featured cemetery will be the Brock Morrison Cemetery at the foot of Lookout Mountain at 283 Creek Road.

The Brock Family arrived in Dade by the 1850s and joined the Morrison clan through a marriage that netted a dozen children. Joy Odom's article this week, to follow this one shortly on The Planet, will tell you more about those families.

The characters to be reenacted during the Cemetery Walk are George Washington Harris (Tom Randolph); Col. Douglas E .Morrison (Reece Fauscett); Catherine Clarke Morrison (Patti Nethery); and Dr. James Russell Brock (Reese Morrison). Hear about murders by poisoning, horse and metal pipe.

Desta Cox Sims shows off her beautiful period costume at last year's Cemetery Walk.

The performances will be held at 4, 5 and 6 pm. Parking at the Brock Morrison is very limited, so parking and bus shuttle service will be provided by Piney Grove Baptist Church. Please be at Piney Grove Baptist by 3:30, 4:30 or 5:30 p.m. to sign in for each tour. The buses will leave from the church parking lot by 10 minutes of the hour.

There is no charge for this event, but donations to advance the work of the Historical Society are accepted. Local history books and Christmas ornaments will be for sale at sign-in.

Please bring water and snacks if desired. Bathrooms will be available only at Piney Baptist Church. A few chairs will be provided at the cemetery.

Join us to learn more about our past and the people who helped to craft the community that we have become.
