Old Canyon Ridge Golf Course Nears Revamped Grand Opening

A helicopter drops a bridge section into place at "The Course at McLemore" on Tuesday in this photo provided by Derryberry Public Relations. Though construction has not yet begun on a long-planned luxury hotel and resort in the old Canyon Ridge area atop Lookout, the golf course closed last September and has since then been undergoing a mega-renovation. A grand opening is planned for June 22. "While the course already provides dramatic mountaintop views, the 18th fairway has been dropped down to the edge of the cliff overlooking McLemore Cove, offering an even more spectacular view of the valley floor," says the Derryberry press release.

The golf course and planned resort lie mostly within Walker County, but a small portion of the property--previously branded as "Tauqueta Falls"--lies within Dade County and is served by the Dade Water Authority. The governing board of the water authority was reshuffled in 2010 after the Dade County Commission discovered to its astonishment that it now owned a sewage treatment plant at the failed luxury housing development. The water authority still operates the sewage plant there, and presumably will also pipe water into the planned hotel and resort when the project comes to fruition.
