It's Friday! And The Planet is as ready to drop behind the horizon as anybody else. But before The Planet subsides amid a gentle glow of tangled planetary rings, beer bubbles and TGIF choruses, here are a few reminders and late-coming announcements:
First, the Dade County Animal Hospital's
annual traveling rabies clinic is this Saturday, June 15. You don't have to take your pets to the vet's office for their rabies shots; the vet and his staff visit four locations around the county and give your pets a jab at a reduced price.
Locations Saturday will be:
Cornerstone Restaurant in Rising Fawn 8:30-8:45 a.m.
Ag Building (behind Taco Bell on 136W 9:15-10 a.m.
B-Mart on Sand Mountain 10:30–11 a.m.
New Salem Community Center noon-12:30 p.m.
Rabies shots will cost $12 per pet, and that price is good for clinic day only. You may pay by cash or check only.
The Dade Animal Hospital offers this clinic yearly as a service to the community, to fight rabies and to allow citizens to take care of their pets affordably.
Now. Also on Saturday is the all-new, all-free "Valleyvibes Music & Arts Festival" at Jenkins Park. The music lineup is from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. and organizer Nathaniel McDaniel (The Planet didn't make that up) says it'll be a tough job to fit in all the bands (20!) he's got scheduled. Those include his own band, Good Grief, as well as Heartstrings, Magnificent Lion and American Boyfriend.
Also on offer will be food vendors, art vendors, comedy and prizes. There is no admission charge, but the festival is in benefit to the Tri-State Food Bank and there will be ample donation opportunities.
Come to the park, help feed the hungry, and hang out with the homies!
Monday at 5 p.m. is the regularly scheduled June meeting of the Dade County Board of Education--that meeting is at the B of E's offices in front of the highschool on Highway 136 East. But also on Monday is a special called meeting of the board of directors of the Dade Water Authority. That meeting is at 6:30 p.m. in the Dade Administrative Building. The water board has its regular meeting next Friday morning, June 21, at 8 a.m., and an organizational meeting on July 2 at 6:30 p.m. But the one on Monday is a special one on personnel; the only item on its agenda is an executive, or closed-door, session.
The water board will not of course divulge what its closed-door personnel discussions are about, at least unless or until it makes them official with a vote; but it has struggled of late with making up to longtime employees for its failure in early years to withhold Social Security. It made provision recently for its just-retired manager of 49 years by arranging for $400,000 in retirement benefits. That led another long-term employee to ask, so what about me? That is one possible personnel matter. Others might feasibly concern questions from or directions to the brand-new general manager who replaced the old one June 1. The Planet will report developments as they develop.
And local-gummint junkies are reminded that the Dade County Commission will hold a special called meeting at 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, in the Administrative Building, for the purpose adopting its proposed fiscal year 2020 budget. The budget totals $10,715,000 this year. A hearing on it was Thursday, June 13, and Dade County Executive Chairman Rumley said he expected little or no changes between now and then. The budget may be reviewed on the county website, dadecounty-ga.gov.
IDA (the Dade Industrial Development Authority) meets at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 17. Also, the U.S. Census Bureau is holding a recruiting event at the Dade County Public Library on Wednesday, June 25, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Workers are needed right away and recruiters promise flexible hours and good pay.
Finally, tickets are on sale now for Lula Lake Land Trust's benefit music festival, Timber Roots, 3-11 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, at LLLT's Core Preserve. Live music includes headliner Aaron Lee Tasjan, The Kernal and Caleb and the Gents. There will be an outside bar, food vendors and food trucks. Tickets are $35-$55 and will benefit LLLT's mission of protecting this beautiful land. Learn more and link to buy tickets at lulalake.org.
