Courtney Gross was sworn into office at 2 p.m. today, Monday, July 1, by Dade Probate Judge Kerri Bray Carter to serve out the unexpired term of longtime County Coroner Johnny Gray. Gray retired abruptly last week for health reasons after nearly three decades on the job. He was up for reelection in 2020 and at this time, Ms. Gross--who ran against Gray for the office in 2016--does intend to run in next year's general election to keep the job. Courtney Gross and her husband, Kyle, were both born and raised in Dade County. Ms. Gross is the daughter of Susan and Danny Tinker and has six siblings. Kyle Gross is the son of Gary and Suzan Gross. Courtney and Kyle have two children, Chandler, 3, and Tucker, 9 months. The new coroner's hobbies are volunteer firefighting, playing with her children and working in her flower gardens. Ms. Gross has been a registered nurse for nine years, seven of those years as a trauma nurse. She had been a firefighter for 11 years. When asked why she ran for coroner in the last election, Ms. Gross said: “Patients and families--including the deceased--need an advocate."

Ms. Gross will be attending a 40-hour, five-day-long coroner’s training course in Forsythe County.
