Ready-to-Read Resumes This Week

First, I would like to thank my friend Donna Street for filling in for me and writing the Friends of the Library column for the past two weeks while I was off gallivanting in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

We had a great trip, but unfortunately, we took the hot weather with us. Edinburgh, Scotland, had its highest-ever record temperature while we were there. They aren’t used to hot weather and many businesses and even hotels don’t have air conditioning. At a few places we just had a fan we could put in the window. But we survived and saw some beautiful scenery as we traveled through Scotland, England, Wales, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Now, back to library business. The Book Club will meet on Tuesday, August 20, at 7 p.m. at the library. We will be discussing The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe. This book documents the stories of the Project Mercury astronauts. For those of us who lived through those days, it will be a walk down Memory Lane. We never missed a space shot at my house as my daddy was fascinated with the space program. For those too young to remember, it will be an education. Join us if you are interested.

Our Ready-to-Read program resumes on Thursday, August 15, at 10:30 a.m. This program is for children 0-5, but older siblings may attend as well.

The Middle Grade Lit Club will meet at the library on Tuesday, August 20, from 4-4:45 p.m. This club is reading the Thrifty Guide to the American Revolution by Jonathan W. Stokes. Optional project: write a short story about your own time travel mission during the American Revolution.

The next installment of the library's Waste Reduction Series will be Thursday, August 22, at 6 p.m. Wasted! The Story of Food Waste will be shown and attendees will enjoy beverages made from locally sourced herbs.

Linda Wilson is everybody's favorite retired English teacher and a faithful library volunteer (except when she takes a notion to go rambling in these here outlandish places such as she has been telling you about above).
