Cave Symposium at Library, Sept. 5, Kids' Cooking Class Sept. 10

At our Book Club meeting last week, we enjoyed discussing The Right Stuff about the Mercury 7 astronauts. Our book for September is The Reckoning by John Grisham. I know there are a lot of John Grisham fans out there, so read this one and join us on the third Tuesday, September 17, at 7 p.m. to talk about it.

The Teen Leadership Council will meet on Thursday, August 29, for their first meeting after the summer break. We will have a team-building day. Come get to know one another with a murder mystery!

Ready-to-Read will have its third session of the year on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. This is for kids 0-5, but older siblings are welcome. We’ll read stories, sing songs, learn some things and make a craft. Be sure to check out some books to read to your kids at home while you are here.

For those of you interested in local history, we have some books for sale here at the library that you might be interested in. We have a reprint of Dade County History, Vol. 1. This book was put together in the 1980s and costs $20. Vol. II of the Dade County History is more recent and much larger. It costs $35. We also have a Dade County Cemetery Survey Book that sells for $30. If you need some help researching your family history, there is usually a volunteer at the library on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons who can get you started.

There will be a free cooking class for kids, Healthy Cooking for Good Living, at the library on Tuesday, September 10, from 6-7 p.m.

On September 5, from 7-9 p.m. at the Dade Public Library, the Dade County Historical Society will host a Symposium on Caves in Dade County. According to the New Georgia Encyclopedia: “Georgia's two northwestern most counties, Dade and Walker, host 164 and 149 caves respectively," so there is plenty to talk about.

Marion O. Smith, Marty Abercrombie, Steve Davis, Joel Sneed, Ken Pennington, Jerry Wallace, Kathy Mackay and several other noted spelunkers have been invited.

Marion O. Smith will give his presentation on his field of expertise and his

experiences caving since the 1960s. Others will be part of a panel discussion on their experiences in the caves of Dade and TAG (Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia) area.

This is a free event.
