Dade County 4-H is off and running! We met with the Dade Elementary Aftercare for the first time this week. We discussed the four H’s–Head, Heart, Hands and Health. We had a great time learning about the five types of leaves: simple, pinnately compound, bi-pinnately compound, palmately compound. and needles, awls,and scale-like. These words don’t mean much by themselves, but they are very different visually, and they help to classify leaves.
We also had the first meeting of the Dade Middle School 4-H Club. Mrs. Fancher Nakhleh is our teacher sponsor. We talked about the different activities available for the year, including Forestry, Cotton Boll and Consumer Judging and Project Achievement. This is going to be a great group!
The afterschool 4-H Activity Club for 6th grade and up met on Thursday. Members brainstormed ideas for activities for the year. We’ll be doing arts & crafts, science experiments, gardening and service projects, and more! The kids will choose officers in a couple of weeks. They have already chosen topics for Project Achievement, so they will be learning about preparing portfolios and presentations.
The new 4-H Forestry Club met on Thursday from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Members learned the five types of leaves right away. They also began practicing how to pace off distances. Mrs. Nakhleh took the group outside to start identifying leaves and trees along the edge of the woods. There are quite a few different types of trees right beside the Ag Center! Forestry Club is for fourth grade and up. You can still join us on Thursdays at 3:45 p.m.
This week on Thursday, September 12, we will have our first Dade County 4-H County Council at 7 p.m. in the Ag Center. Every second Thursday of the month, we will have an evening meeting so that all 4-H’ers in fourth grade and up can meet together for an hour of fun. We’ll have games, crafts, service projects and more! Come join us!
