Dade High students encircle the marching band in support Thursday night following the homecoming parade after learning one of the bandmembers had lost her life in an automobile accident just before the parade.
Dr. Jan Harris, superintendent of schools, issued this statement today regarding Thursday's tragedy.
We are saddened to announce that three of our students at Dade County High School were involved in an automobile accident last night, October 3, 2019, at approximately 6:20 p.m. One student, Alexis Moore, age 17, lost her life in that tragic crash, and the other students are in the hospital seeking medical attention at this time. This is Homecoming Week at Dade County High School. Principal James Fahrney announced that, after seeking input from the student body, the game will be played tonight. However, the Marching Wolverines will not be performing as two of the students involved in the accident are members of the Color Guard. Everyone is encouraged to wear green because this was Alexis Moore’s favorite color. The Student Body has named Alexis Moore as the Honorary Homecoming Queen. Counselors and community members embraced the student body last night and this morning and were available as needed to listen to our students and share their grief. We are heartbroken and covet your thoughts and prayers. Many are asking what they can do at this difficult time. We invite all to write notes or posters to display at Dade County High School to encourage and support our students and staff.
