Letter to the Editor: Homeschool Group Recommends Forester Apiary

This is a letter to the editor from Sophia Price, who gives this report on a homeschool group's recent field trip to Ed Forester's bee farm.

Forester Farms & Apiary was the field trip destination of a homeschool group from Chattanooga. The Ingleside School students were able to experience more bee education than normally found in a classroom.

After touring the Honey House and Store they not only learned about bees and bee problems, they observed a bee yard and saw the infamous varroa mites and small hive beetles. Then the many questions they had about honeybees were answered.

A frame of honey was uncapped and extracted while they observed. Many tasted a honeycomb for the first time. After a picnic lunch, a short hike in the woods, some of the students pumped water from a working hand pump before being treated to homemade cookies made by Mrs. Ed Forester. The field trip was one the students will take with them for a lifetime and hopefully they will see honeybees as an important part of agriculture.
