Veterans Day Events Include Saturday Morning Parade

A shot from last year's Veterans Day parade.

Monday is Veterans Day. That means that this Saturday, Nov. 9, is time for Dade County's annual Veterans Day, which rolls and marches down Main Street courtesy of Trenton's American Legion Post 106.

The Legion's Gary Moore says the parade will form up at 10 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Trenton First Baptist, on the south side of town at the junction of highways 11 and 136 E. The parade will begin at 11 p.m. and will proceed north up Main Street past the Trenton town square, ending at Bank of Dade on the north side.

After the parade, the vets will take the back way to Jenkins Park, where the usual après-parade hot dog lunch will be served, probably beginning around 1 p.m.

Trenton is a small town and The Planet couldn't find many other Veterans Day bashes going on, but here's a special run by the aforementioned Bank of Dade for vets: free checking account services for veterans and active military personnel:

This also seems a good time to remind veterans that the Georgia Department of Veterans Services sends a representative to Dade County one Wednesday a month to answer veterans' questions and help them with red tape.

Bill Smith is retired from the U.S. Army and now serves as a veterans' representative for Walker, Catoosa and Dade counties. He is available in the Dade Administrative Building meeting room from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the last Wednesday of every month.

Bill can help vets fill out forms to apply for disability, make claims for pensions and in general wade through bureaucracy to take advantage of the benefits they have coming to them.

Yet another advocate for veterans in Dade is County Commissioner Allan Bradford. If you have questions about the parade this weekend or need help locally, Allan's number is (423) 413-0245.

Happy Veterans Day! Vets, thanks for your service. Everybody else: Turn out for the parade! It's your chance to support both your community and the men and women in uniform who've helped keep it safe and here for us. And sometimes they throw chocolate...
