The Book Club has selected its books for the coming year. Here is the list:
January – The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (HF) (historical fiction) by Mary Ann Shaffer. It is a little-mentioned historical fact that England's Channel Islands were occupied by the Germans during World War II. This novel explores life there under the Nazis.
February – Into Thin Air (NF) by Jon Krakauer. Details the events of the 1996 Mount Everest expedition where some members die and some are stranded in a storm.
March – The Guardians (F) by John Grisham. A legal thriller about victims of false incarceration.
April – Talking to Strangers (NF) by Malcolm Gladwell, What we should know about the people we don’t know. Examines our interactions with strangers.
May – Confederates in the Attic (NF) by Tony Horwitz. For all those who remain intrigued by the legacy of the Civil War.
June – Lost Roses (HF) by Martha Hall Kelly. Three female friends whose friendship carries them through the dark days of World War I.
July – Where the Crawdads Sing (F) by Delia Owens. A runaway bestseller, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of a possible murder.
August – News of the World (HF) by Paulette Jiles. A Western novel set in Texas after the Civil War that centers around the return of a girl to her family who was kidnapped by the Kiowa.
September – The Topeka School (F) by Ben Lerner. A tale of adolescence, transgression and the conditions that have given rise to the trolls and tyrants of the New Right.
October – The Last Anniversary (F) by Liane Moriarity. This book has wit, a page-turning storyline, and lovable and eccentric characters.
November – The Indifferent Stars Above (NF) by Daniel James Brown. The harrowing story of a Donner Party bride.
December – Christmas Party and Book Selection
January 2021 – Amusing Ourselves to Death (F) by Neil Postman. Public discourse in the age of show business.
