In this first day of qualifying, Dade already has an interesting snippet of election news: Angie Galloway, daughter and deputy of 35-year incumbent Tax Commissioner Jane Moreland, has filed papers to run for the office her mother has held since 1985.
At The Planet's last inquiry, Ms. Moreland had been waffling about whether to retire or seek yet another term. Ms. Galloway's qualification may well signal her mother's decision to step down--though The Planet has had no confirmation of that. Ms. Moreland always ran as a Democrat, the last Dade officeholder to do so. Ms. Galloway has qualified as a Republican, so if her mom decides to run after all, Dade could have an interesting November.
Qualifying ends at noon Friday.
Here, from the Georgia secretary of state's website, is the list of candidates who had qualified for county office by 4:35 p.m. Monday. The Planet will update the list if more candidates qualify later in the afternoon.
