Here Are Some Books And Resources To Help You While Away the Quarantine

If you have never had time for a book club, maybe you have that time now. This month our Dade County Public Library Book Club will be discussing Malcom Gladwell’s Talking to Strangers. It’s a fascinating book, and it shows us we may not be doing as good a job communicating with others as we think. We will be discussing this book via Zoom on Tuesday, April 21. If you are interested in joining us, contact me, Linda Wilson, at lanew@tvn.net.

While you have time to read, our May book is Confederates in the Attic by Tony Horwitz, and June’s book is Lost Roses by Martha Hall Kelly. Download a book through RBDigital or order one online.

We could probably use some book recommendations while we are sheltering in place. I am listening to an audiobook that I’m really enjoying: MoBituaries: Great Lives Worth Reliving by Mo Rocca. Rocca is an expert researcher and a great storyteller. You can also listen to some of his Mobituaries on his podcast by the same title.

I confess to being a great lover of the mystery genre and I’ve recently enjoyed reading several books by Elizabeth George, the Inspector Lynley series. I actually watched the TV show based on the series first, and now I’m reading the books she has written since the series ended.

Are you a David Baldacci fan? He’s one of my favorites. I got hooked on his books after reading the first book in the Memory Man series. The sixth book in that series comes out this month on April 21. It is entitled Walk the Wire.

If you have a book you would like to recommend, please email me at lanew@tvn.net with a title and tell us a little about the book.

Our staff members are still busy looking for activities to keep you and your children busy and learning. This one is for our 5th-8th graders out there. Here's a great resource for you, and it's free through April 30. World Book Wizard has practice drills filterable by grade and subject matter from the trusted name of World Book. Looking for something fun and free to do with your kids? Or maybe you just need to engage in a relaxing activity to take your mind off things? The New York Library of Medicine has put together an initiative to bring museums and libraries together to provide free historical coloring activities for people of all ages. Stay safe!
