Touch-Free Fun, Summer Reading, Free Kids' Meals--Here's the Library's Summer Lineup!

There’s lots of news about Summer Reading this week. Be sure you register your kids and teens on BeanStack at chrl.org.

There will be seven weeks of programs/activities for children in preschool to fifth grade and three activities for those in grades 6 through 12. We will also have two programs for adults, in addition to our monthly Book Club meetings. You might want to save this column to keep up with what is going on all summer.

Each week, pick up craft kits for children preschool to 5th grade. Please pick these up by Tuesday, as the library is not currently open on Wednesday. This may change, but we don’t know when.

On Thursdays at 10:30 a.m., there will be a program on Facebook Live on the Dade County Library Facebook page, where a staff member will read or tell a story and then show the kids how to assemble their craft. On our first week, on June 4, kids will make a dragon mask. Here’s the complete schedule for kids for crafts:

June 4th – Dragon Masks

June 11th – Goldfish Windsock (pick up kit June 4-9)

June 18th – Sword and Crown (pick up kit June 11-16)

June 25th – Rip Van Winkle Beard (pick up kit June 18-24)

July 2nd – Magic Mirror Portraits (pick up kit June 25- July 1)

July 9th – Fairy Doors (pick up kits July 2-July 8)

July 16th – Paper Tissue Windows (pick up kits July 9-July15

There will also be touch-free activities at the library and kids can come in any time to see those. Our first on June 4 will be the Reading Room Reveal. I don’t want to reveal too much myself, but I’ve heard there might be a dragon. June 11-17 we will have mini-museums for our touch-free activity in the library.

All the toys in the children’s area have been put away so that children will not be sharing toys. Returned books are not shelved for at least 24 hours. If parents still don’t feel comfortable bringing children in the library, please go to chrl.org and put the books you want to check out on hold and the staff will pull them and deliver them to you curbside. Remember to keep up with your child’s reading progress on BeanStack so they can receive prizes.

The first teen activity will be June 9, and this is making your Dragonskin Journals. Teens can pick up their kits June 2-June 9.

The first adult program will be a cooking class on June 23. More on this later.

Our Book Club for adults will meet on Tuesday, June 16, at 7 p.m. We’re not sure yet whether we will meet again on Zoom or in person, but we will be letting you know soon. The Book Club is reading Lost Roses by Martha Hall Kelly.

The library staff encourages you to come by and fill out your 2020 census information online. They will help you get started.

A week’s worth of breakfasts and lunches will be distributed on Wednesdays to kids age1 to 18 through the school system’s summer lunch program. Distribution will be at Dade and Davis Elementary Schools from 10:30 a.m. to noon and at the library from

noon to 2 p.m. or as long as they last. Lunches may be picked up at the side door of the library.
