Morrell Holcomb



Morrell Holcomb, 86, of Lookout Mountain, Georgia, died on Friday, March 3, 2017. He was an avid fan of sports and music and loved conversing with others. He was a graduate of Ider High School and the University of Alabama and had worked on a master’s degree at the University of Georgia.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean War as a member of Company C, 151st Engineers Combat BA. He coached and taught in the Dade County, Whitfield County and Dalton City School systems. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and a member of New Salem Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John L. and Magnolia Abercrombie Holcomb; three brothers, Marvin Edgar, Milford and Marion Arthur Holcomb; and daughter, Ava Maria Holcomb Mallett.

Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Anna Rochelle McBryar Holcomb; two sons, John Michael (Kim) Holcomb, Dalton, Ga., and Allen Morrell Holcomb, Trenton; two grandsons, John Morrell (Brittney) Holcomb, Rocky Face, Ga., and Zackery Thomas (Emily) Holcomb, Chatsworth, Ga.; and two granddaughters, Alicia Holcomb, Dalton, and Taylor Nicole (Tyler) Mallett, Varnell, Ga.; three great- grandsons, Aidan, Robbie and William; one brother, J.L. Holcomb, Ider; one sister, Sue Carroll (Glenn), Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be at noon Thursday, March 9, in the chapel of Moore Funeral Home with Brother Jim Hixon officiating. Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.

Honorary pallbearers will be former athletes, assistant coaches and members of Company C 151st Engineers Combat BA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Miracle Field of Whitfield County or to New Salem Volunteer Fire Department.

Visitation will be held Wednesday 5-8 p.m. and Thursday 10 a.m.-noon.
