Edgar Dawson

James Edgar Dawson, 78, of Bryant, Ala., died on Sunday evening, May 28, 2017.

Edgar was a servant to his family, church and community. He was known as Brother Edgar at Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, and could be found greeting everyone with a fun remark, a warm smile and a Lifesaver from his pocket. He carried the name “Paddlefoot” to his railroad buddies, KF4CJ to his ham radio pals, and Casey Jones back in his CB radio days.

Edgar was a graduate of Rossville (Ga.) High and proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He was active with the Masonic Lodge in Rossville, where he was a Past Master, and with Alhambra Shriners in Chattanooga, where he was also a member of the Tin Lizzie’s parade unit. He belonged to Bryant Ruritan Club and was a past member of the Chattanooga Barbershop Choir, a past state director of Alabama Air Force Mars, and a volunteer at Memorial Hospital. He was involved with Alabama Disaster Relief where he assisted after many tornadoes, and worked in emergency communications during hurricanes in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Florida.

A pillar to his family, community and all those who knew him, he was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His family calls him “hero” and takes comfort in knowing he will always be watching over us.

He was preceded in death by his parents, O.B. and Mary Nell Dawson; brother, Larry Amos Dawson; and niece, Terri Denise Hasty.

Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Patricia Nell Dawson; children, “Crissie” Renee Gordy (Scott) of Ringgold, Ga., James David Dawson (Kimberly) of Haslet, Texas, and Lee Ann Shrader (Michael) of Bryant, Ala.; six grandchildren, Jennifer Marsden, Jessica Cotter, Mia Dawson, Cody Shrader, Amber Shrader and Ashley Shrader; sister, Doris Hasty (Gary); and sister-in-law, Carolyn Dawson, of Rossville; nieces, Angie McBee (Tim) of Rock Spring, Ga., and Amy Fahrubel (Todd) of Flat Rock, Ala.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 1, at 1 PM EDT in the Trenton chapel of Moore Funeral Home with Brother David Patty officiating. Interment will follow in Bryant Holiness Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Wednesday 4-8 p.m. and Thursday 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
