Lamar Avans

Gunter Lamarel “Red” Avans, 87, of Chattanooga, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2018. Lamar was a native of Dade County who currently resided in Chattanooga. He was a rare man whose generosity and compassion toward others extended to all people, not just family and friends. Until his health failed he worked tirelessly to help others. His main concern was to honor God by not hurting anyone’s feelings.

He will be sorely missed; his passing leaves a vacuum in his family that no one can ever fill. We love you eternally, Daddy. See you soon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gunter and Emma Avans; sisters Ernestine Avans and Prinel Batey; and granddaughter Lauren Junkins.

He is survived by his eldest daughter, Barbara Reid and husband, Robert, of Ooltewah, Tenn.; eldest son, S.L. Avans and wife, Wanda, of Huntsville, Ala.; daughter Trena Holaday and husband, Tim, of Flintstone; son Gary Avans, Chattanooga; son Stephen Avans and wife Carrie; grandsons Scott Reid, Lucas Avans and Darrell Avans; granddaughters Heather Junkins, Alicia Avans and Emmaleigh Avans; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Sherman Avans, Gary C. Avans, and Terry Avans; three sisters, Brenda Moore, Jean Hill, and Karen Haun; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, at the Trenton chapel with Lamar’s brother Terry Avans officiating. Burial will follow in Gibb Dock Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday 4-8 p.m. and Tuesday 10-11 a.m.
