James R. “Jakie” Smith Jr., 94, of Rising Fawn, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018. in a local hospital.
Mr. Smith was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II who served aboard the U.S.S. Intrepid, of which he was a "plank owner," or member of the original commissioning crew. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, enjoyed spending time on his farm with his family, and was an avid fan of the Tennessee Vols and Atlanta Braves.
Jakie was also a member of the Tri-State Cattleman’s Association and a founding member of the South Dade Fire Department. He had served on the Dade County Water Board for a number of years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Russell Smith Sr. and Lillie Fuller Smith; siblings, Orman Smith, Lillian McCloud, Lucille Smyth abd Edna Heatherly; and grandson, Ricky Smith.
Survivors include his loving wife of 45 years, Phyllis Ivey Smith; children, Becky Smith of Trenton, Jim Smith of Jasper, Tenn., Debby Powell of Trenton and Chris Porter, Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Chuck Carver, Leslie Pardue, Kerry Carver, Burkett Lee Black, Charity Black, Amanda Black, Allison Porter and Garrett Shipman; 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 2, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Billy Wallace, Bro. Tim Renshaw and Bro. Chuck Carver officiating. Interment will follow in Deer Head Cove Cemetery with full military honors.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 1, from 4-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour at Ryan Funeral Home, Trenton, Ga.
