Martin Landon Nathaniel Haynes, or “Lanny” as most people knew him, always had a smile on his face and never complained.
Lanny was born on January 20, 1947, in Johnson City, Tenn., the son of the late Ben and Margaret Haynes. Lanny grew up in Chattanooga and attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School and Notre Dame High School, graduating in 1965. He then attended East Tennessee State University in Johnson City before transferring to the University of Chattanooga. where he completed his associate's degree.
At OLPH Lanny met his lifelong friends Andy Nolan, Vic Massari, Jon Keene, the late Johnny Hennen and Laura Hennessey Overmeer--friends who became family.
Lanny was a family man and his favorite place to be was at home. He loved the Fighting Irish and the Georgia Bulldogs but at his core he was a closet Tennessee Volunteer.
Lanny is survived by his wife of 47 years, Suzanne; son, Ben Haynes (Heather); daughters Sally Katz (Seth); and Dolores Haynes; siblings Benn Haynes (Mary), Sarah Troub (Don) and Bonnie Haynes; and six grandchildren, Harris, Hadley, Emmy and Thatcher Haynes and Ben and Emily Katz.
A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, November 26, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of The Mount Catholic Church with visitation preceding at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Lanny’s memory to either OLPH Catholic School or Notre Dame High School.
